THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE

Y'all, we have to rethink the turtle thing. Let's build our terrarium and talk about which animal to get.
To clarify, what I was thinking of was a tortoise. True turtles need more water space than we can create in a terrarium, which is what I have the basic supplies for-- so a water turtle is out.

Here are the problems with tortoises:

1. They live for THIRTY YEARS.
2. They get to be 10 inches in size! What would I do with a tortoise that size?
3. If we buy a store tortoise, we can't release it into the wild-- it might not know how to take care of itself. So I need to be able to care for it till I'm 77 years old.
4. Store-bought tortoises are EXPENSIVE!
5. we can look for one, but there's no guarantee that we'll find one.

so here are my favorite choices for a terrarium:

what do you all think?

So, THIS WEEK:

TUE Give back tests; start ch 4 section 1 on ecosystems and communities; work on terrarium
HOMEWORK: read ch 4 section 1 and do worksheet
WED finish terrarium. Biotic and abiotic factors.
HOMEWORK: active reading assignment.
THUR Bonessi Day. HOMEWORK: Read chapter 4 section 2.
FRI Natural selection and the diversity of life. HOMEWORK: chapter 4 take-home quiz. PUT OUR ANIMALS IN THE TERRARIUM!

Monday, October 10, 2011

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE

Monday-- review for chapter 3 test! It will be basic
TUESDAY: test chapter 3: start creating our terrarium
WEDNESDAY: Finish terrarium and have it turtle-ready.

THE WEEK'S SCHEDULE:

Sorry to be late in posting the schedule, guys.

As you know, we've switched things up a bit. Now every Thursday is a "Bonessi Day" where you'll do work on the Physics, Atmosphere, Space and Energy end of the Environment. So from now on I'll build that in to the calendar.

THIS WEEK (up to Fall Break):

WEDNESDAY-- reading quiz; intro to the Biosphere; Hydrothermal Vents
THURSDAY: Bonessi Day
FRIDAY: Hydrosphere: fresh water and the law debate
HOMEWORK: questions for chapter 3 section 3 due MONDAY

MONDAY: Review chapter 3
TUESDAY: test chapter 3
WEDNESDAY: ecosystems-- CREATE A TERRARIUM!

ESSAY QUESTION DUE FRIDAY:

Just in case you misplace it gang, here's your essay question:

I. Write an essay about the Scientific Method as it was used in the movie Never Cry Wolf.
a. Describe a time in the movie when the scientific method was used. What was going on in the movie? What was Tyler’ question that he needed to find an answer for?
b. Did Tyler have an official “control group” and “variable group” in his scientific experiment? If not, do you think his experimental outcome was still legitimate?

II. Did you like the ending to the movie? Why or why not?

As we discussed: 2 substantial paragraphs (so an estimated one handwritten page).

Sci Method continues tomorrow!

Monday, September 19, 2011

WEEK OF SEP 19-23:

This week we'll finish Never Cry Wolf, and use it to talk about The Scientific Method.

Tuesday we do a Prezi on Sci. Method, and Wednesday you all will do a Scientific Method lab, where you hypothesize things about yeast.

Homework coming this week:
Monday-- read Ch 2 Section 1
Tuesday-- Sci Method Homework; essay on Never Cry Wolf (HW due tomorrow, essay due Friday). Look at Chrysalis under dissecting scope.
Wed-- lab; turn in Sci Method HW: READ CH 2 SXN 2.
Thur: Journal entry; discuss lab results; Statistics. Essay due tomorrow.
Fri: Essay due. Pond dip. Make sugar water for butterflies. HW: worksheet on statistics.

NEXT WEEK: We will finish up chapter 2 (short chapter!), take a test, and move on to some fun stuff on how the earth began.

calender updates available

Hi everyone,

Take a look at the calendar, which is mapped out through the next 3 weeks. Here's what's coming up: a movie, three pond dips, making a model, and an experiment with yeast. AND we've got our caterpillars to follow.

Note that you have a TEST ON CHAPTER 1 SEPTEMBER 13, and a TEST ON CHAPTER 2 SEPTEMBER 27. You also have a couple of quizzes and a handful of homework assignments thrown in there too.

Don't forget to research Stericycle and to identify some pond critters this weekend.

Get ready for a fun, busy month!

EDITED 9/5 TO ADD: Y'all, our caterpillars are HUGE! They look like this:

WELCOME TO ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE!

Hey, check this out:

Isn't that cool?

You just saw an example of ECOLOGY: the study of organisms' relationships to their environments. In Environmental Science, we use pieces of all the physical and life sciences to identify and solve problems related to the environment-- particularly those caused by, or affecting, humans.

Here's environmental science at work:

And here's what some High School kids in Miami decided to do about it:

welcome to a great year!
